At St Thomas of Canterbury School, our curriculum is ambitious, carefully sequenced and rooted in evidence-informed practice. We recognise the importance of building on prior learning, helping children make connections and providing regular opportunities to revisit and recall knowledge. Through this approach, children develop secure understanding, know more and remember more, enabling them to build the knowledge and skills they need for future learning.
We use carefully selected approaches and resources to support high-quality teaching across the curriculum. Read Write Inc. provides our systematic phonics programme, helping children develop the skills and confidence to become fluent readers. White Rose Maths supports the development of mathematical fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. In Key Stage 2, we use Ark Reading to develop pupils’ reading comprehension and understanding. We have also embedded St Clare Catholic Multi Academy Trust’s approach to writing, providing a consistent, structured approach to developing children’s writing skills across the school.

As a Catholic school, our curriculum is underpinned by our faith and the values that shape our school community. A minimum of 10% of the teaching timetable is dedicated to formal Religious Education, but our Catholic mission extends far beyond this. We seek not only to help children learn about faith, but also to learn to live their faith through their relationships, choices and actions. Daily prayer, worship, liturgy and opportunities for spiritual reflection are integral to school life, helping children grow in faith, compassion and respect for others.
Our curriculum aims to develop the whole child. Alongside strong foundations in reading, writing and mathematics, children experience a broad range of subjects and opportunities that nurture curiosity, creativity, resilience and independence. We want every child to feel valued, to recognise their own potential and to leave St Thomas’ well-prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond school.
Throughout our curriculum and daily life, our mission guides us: “Let all that you do be done with love.”
