What a lovely final week of the half-term we have had in Reception! The children have been busy exploring autumn, celebrating harvest and continuing to develop their confidence and independence. We are incredibly proud of how much they have grown during their first half-term in Reception!
Understanding the World – Harvest Around the World
This week, we continued our learning about harvest, exploring how it is celebrated in different parts of the world. We compared what we could see in different harvest pictures, identifying similarities and differences. We also spent time thinking about all the things we are thankful for and sharing our ideas with our friends.
Literacy – On the Way Home
Our storytelling focus this week has been On the Way Home. We explored some exciting new vocabulary, including sneaking, gasped and crammed, discussing what these words mean and using them in different contexts.
We also continued practising our oral retelling of The Little Red Hen, using puppets to bring the characters to life and develop our storytelling skills.
Maths – Mastering Number
In maths, we continued our Mastering Number sessions, developing our understanding of numbers through practical activities and mathematical discussions, exploring subtising up to 4. We also explored patterns, encouraging the children to compare, notice similarities and differences, and explain their thinking.
PSED – Learning to Manage Our Feelings
This week, we focused on strategies to help us regulate our emotions. We practised calming techniques such as slow breathing, counting to five, stretching and taking movement breaks.
We also explored how our calm corner can help us when we experience big feelings. The children have been encouraged to recognise their Zones of Regulation and begin choosing strategies that help them feel calm and ready to learn.
Religious Education – Baptism
We continued our learning about Baptism and what it means to be welcomed into God's family. A special part of our week was our planned visit to church with our Year 5 buddies, helping us develop our understanding of this important sacrament and the special symbols associated with it.
Nature School – Autumn Changes
During Nature School, our focus was Fletcher and the Falling Leaves. We reflected on everything we have discovered about autumn and investigated how our environment has changed over the past few weeks.
We revisited our previous observations, explored autumn leaves and natural materials, and shared our favourite discoveries from the half-term.
Phonics and Handwriting
We have continued working hard in our phonics groups, revisiting sounds, practising blending and developing our letter formation. Our handwriting focus this week has been the letter t.
Please continue practising sounds at home and encouraging your child to blend simple words using their Fred Talk skills. Below are some videos to share over the holiday.

We are so proud of everything the children have achieved during their first half-term in Reception. They have worked hard to build friendships, learn new routines and develop their confidence as learners.
Thank you for all your support over the past eight weeks. We hope you all have a wonderful, restful half-term break and look forward to welcoming everyone back for another exciting half-term of learning!
