Week ending 16/10

What another wonderful week of learning we have had in Reception! This week, we have continued exploring autumn, developed our storytelling skills and enjoyed lots of exciting opportunities to learn through play.

Understanding the World – Autumn and Harvest

This week, we continued our learning about harvest, thinking about how crops are grown and collected and how farming has changed over time. We compared photographs from the past and present and talked about the important role farmers play in providing our food.

We also explored the beautiful colours of autumn, investigating leaves, fruits and seeds. During Nature School, we looked closely at the changes happening around us and discovered how seeds can be scattered to help new plants grow.

Literacy – The Little Red Hen

Our storytelling focus this week has been The Little Red Hen. We have been practising retelling the story using actions and familiar language, helping us develop our confidence and storytelling skills.

We also recalled how we made our bread rolls, sequencing photographs and beginning to use instructional language to explain the steps involved. The children enjoyed creating their own Little Red Hen puppets to support their imaginative storytelling.

Maths – Numbers, Measures and Patterns

In maths, we continued our Mastering Number sessions, developing our number sense through practical activities, discussion and games. We also explored measures and patterns, encouraging the children to notice, compare and explain their mathematical thinking.

PSED – Understanding Our Feelings

This week, we continued exploring the Zones of Regulation. We practised naming different emotions, recognising how our bodies give us clues about our feelings and identifying things that might change our Zone.

We encouraged the children to use sentences such as "I feel... because..." to help them explain their emotions. We also continued discussing kindness, sharing and taking turns with our friends.

Religious Education – Baptism

In RE, we began learning about Baptism and how it is a special celebration of welcome into God's family. We explored the important people and symbols involved, including the priest, godparents and baptismal font. The children also had opportunities to act out a Baptism using dolls and water.

Phonics and Handwriting

We have continued working hard in our phonics groups, practising our sounds, blending skills and letter formation. We have also been developing our pencil control through our daily handwriting activities.

Please continue practising the sounds your child has been learning at home. Little and often really does make a difference!

Learning Through Play

Our continuous provision has been full of autumn-inspired activities this week! From exploring autumn colours at the easel and creating with leaves to investigating natural objects and developing our counting skills, the children have had lots of opportunities to practise their learning independently.

We finished the week enjoying Buddy Time and our well-deserved Golden Time!

Thank You!

Homework

The children will be coming home with some number work this week

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. We are so proud of the children's growing confidence, curiosity and enthusiasm for learning.

Have a lovely weekend!
