This week in Reception, we have been exploring Harvest, noticing autumn changes and learning more about our feelings.
In Maths, we have continued our Mastering Number activities, developing our understanding of numbers through practical games and discussion. We have also explored measures, practising the language we use to compare objects.
In Storytelling, our story has been The Little Red Hen. We discussed the characters, setting and events before creating a story map to help us retell the story in order. We also sequenced pictures and followed instructions to make our own bread rolls! Our vocabulary included order, sequence, recipe, mix and knead.
In Understanding the World, we have been learning about Harvest, discussing what it means and how it is celebrated. We talked about farmers gathering crops and used Autumn and Harvest bingo to practise vocabulary such as crops, farmer, vegetables and fruit.
Our outdoor and creative learning has focused on the changes autumn brings. We looked back at photographs from earlier in the term and explored our woodland area, noticing differences in the environment. We also used leaves to create our own leaf men pictures, exploring shapes and arranging materials to make a collage.
In PSED, we have been practising naming our feelings and talking about how we might feel in familiar situations. We explored the clues our bodies give us, such as a smile, tears, a fast heartbeat or tight muscles, and linked these to the Zones of Regulation. We also talked about what can change our Zone and practised saying: “I feel… I am in the… Zone because…”
In RE, we have continued learning about the creation story and explored this further with our y5 buddies in collective worship.
At home, you could ask your child to retell The Little Red Hen, look for autumn changes on a walk or practise a simple feelings check-in together. Please continue practising your child’s phonics sounds and letter formation, links below.
